CSX inherited reliable SD40-2 workhorses from various railroads including Chessie System, Family Lines, Conrail, etc. In 2011 CSX initiated a rebuild program to ensure many additional years of service from their SD40-2 fleet. While much work was done internally, the biggest external change was the replacement of the entire original cab/nose/sub-base assembly at the front of the locomotive.

Due to the poor condition of the original cabs from years of harsh operating conditions, a new cab assembly, supplied by National Railway Equipment (NRE), replaced the original. Designed to offer greater crew comfort and safety, these new boxy cabs breathed new life into CSX’s venerable SD40-2s. The rebuilt units were re-designated as SD40-3s. This is the first time they have been offered in ready-to-run plastic.
